League of Legends: Wild Rift – Lunar Revel

It’s the Year of the Tiger and Riot Games’ League of Legends: Wild Rift had something special in mind to celebrate it. For the Lunar New Year, we were tasked with designing and animating the promo campaign. Partnering with Riot Games we created a whole lot of fun, just look at all the sparklies!!

The Process

Riot already had the branding pretty well figured out for this event, but it wasn’t extended out and interpreted for video. We stepped in, took a look through their brand guide, and presented several different interpretations for them to choose from.

The next step was to develop the animation styles for the various title cards. A few scenes needed to be animated from their Key Art as well. Using a combination of anchor point animation, puppetry, VFX particle simulations, and lighting magic, in collaboration with Riot, we were able to bring those scenes to life.

Taking particle simulations to the next level.

The key art and table scenes originally had painted fireworks and VFX sparkles, when we discussed the various elements we were going to animate to bring the images to life, we knew there was going to be a lot of particle simulations. While we were developing the particle simulations for the fireworks we decided that there should be a giant “grand finale” style burst to help the transition to the following scene. Marcus developed a burst that took the form of Year of the Tiger logo art as a big flashy special nod to the holiday.

It’s a great example of how we’re constantly looking for ways to put a little icing on top of every cake we bake.
