FRINGE SEASON 3 BRANDING

We develop show packages to attract the target audience. In the case of Fringe, Fox had a solid male 18-44 following. The show tested well with women but their promotion and branding didn’t draw that demographic. We stepped in and developed a lighter more accessible branding and promotional package that proved highly successful. Fox saw a significant lift in viewership mostly in the targeted demographic and continued to use our branding package for the rest of the show’s run.

branding the space between two worlds

Our initial concept involved exploring the world of The Observers, enigmatic, mysterious characters from the show that appeared to exist outside of the space/time paradigm. We conceived the world of The Observers as a negative space where bits from our universe and the alternate universe are traveling through to its opposite for the Fringe Season 3 branding. Basically, a big geek fest happened when we got this assignment!

The Process

The branding look we developed called for photo real clouds. Developing predictive, photo real cloud simulations required for our animations proved to be a specific challenge within the constraints of the project. After exploring a few different techniques we devised a process of combining texture mapping and particle simulation with good old fashioned 2.5d plates. The result was fantastic! The finished project looked as though they were actually shot.

The logos and key assets were built using XSI while the jet stream and secondary elements along with the customizable elements and typography were built using Cinema 4D. Templates were produced for both the C4D assets and the compositing and finishing in After Effects.
